The show is a one day show, Saturday, December 2nd and it is indoors from 10 am to 6 pm at Sanger Elementary School located at:

Art Life Kenya

A year ago, Lynda Smith asked me if I’d like to participate with other artists in a fund-raiser designed to raise money for Kenyan children orphaned as a results of the AIDS crisis in that country.

The proposed concept, called the “Message in a Bottle Project” was simple: I would receive a plastic bottle with a piece of paper inside. Authored by one of said orphaned Kenyan children, this paper would tell me about the child’s life, his/her dreams, etc. I would then use that as inspiration to create a piece of art which would be shown in an exhibit in Austin and then donated/auctioned off to raise money to assist this worthy cause.

Sharon Penner and I collaborated and, along with several hundred other artists that responded in the affirmative, submitted “NDOTO” (The Kenyan word for “Dream”) a year ago.

The piece was not created in my usual furniture/stained glass genre.

It features a quite-rusted house-shaped piece of metal that is riveted to an idyllic blue-sky background. The house has no door; only a window that is barely out of reach of the rusty patinaed ladder. Stamped into the metal are 18 translations of the word “Dream”…18 different languages. Please see the image above.

Imagine my surprise and pleasure when this organization began using “NDOTO” in ALL of their press releases, communications, websites, etc. The Evite invitation will soon follow..and it is used on that as well.

As you’ll see, the exhibit will be held on Saturday evening, October 21st, 2006 at the Austin Children’s Museum, in Austin, TX. Sharon and I will be at the artists’ reception and there for the whole event.

I send you this merely asking you to spread the word about this worthwhile cause and the event in Austin. Please pass this on to other art lovers and interested folks.

Admission into the event costs between $50 and $100 to attend. Please be aware that they also need volunteers to assist in many capacities…and volunteers don’t have to pay!

There also will be a way for folks to bid on the auctioned art online. Please spread that message to folks outside of Austin!

Addison Artfest

Oak Cliff Artisan Larry Pile has a booth at the Addison Artfest this three day Memorial weekend. His booth is in the North West section, in an endcap near the 500 Inc silent auction tent.

Artfest, one of the largest in the metroplex is well attended, with over 300 artists. The proceeds go to The 500 Inc, a Dallas-based organization that funds and promotes the arts in all of its many variations. There is live music, food and a wide variety of juried artists!

Helping the Homeless

Oak Cliff Artisans is proud to sponsor a booth at their Fall Show for homeless artisans from the Stewpot. The Stewpot is a comprehensive resource center for homeless and at-risk individuals of Dallas. The Stewpot also offers comprehensive children and youth programs. The arts and crafts program at the Stew Pot has been in place for about five years, and artists have had the chance to show their wares at the downtown Public Library in the past during the month of December. This will be their first adventure in a public market.

Repujado workshops

Repujado, a traditional craft in Latin America is emerging as a new artform in the U.S. Carla-Marie Weir, member of the Oak Cliff Artisans, learned the Spanish Colonial artform in Venezeuela 2 years ago. Using thin sheets of metal, the artist decorates wooden objects such as crosses, frames and plaques.

In collaboration with the Latino Cultural Center, Carla is providing an introductory 3 week series of in-studio workshops. They wil be held the first three saturdays of December, from 11:30-2:30, at the Latino Cultural Center, Latino Cultural Center 2600 Live Oak (@ Good Latimer), Dallas, TX 75204, TX.

Take this fun, hands-on workshop and leave with several pieces of art, just in time for holiday giving! Registration and reservations are required and space is limited. "NDOTO", a collaboration between artists Larry Pile and Sharon Dawn Penner, is a 12" x 12" x 3" Mixed Media piece created with wood, metal, wire, etc.
It features a rusted house without doors and a window out of reach of the attached copper ladder. Stamped in the rusty metal of the house are 18 translations, in various languages, for the word "dream". Outside of the sky, on the background panel, is an idyllic cloud-filled sky. The frame is Hard Maple and comes ready to hang. The entirety of the piece was conceived and created by the artists for this exhibit.
